Beyond the Invisible Veil: Unveiling the Truth of Living with Chronic Illness
There are moments in life that change everything—moments that redefine who we are and how we see the world. For me, that moment came not with a bang, but with a relentless whisper—a constant, nagging pain that refused to leave. It was the beginning of a journey I never asked for, a path shrouded in invisibility and misunderstanding.
My name is Tammy Collins, and I want to share a piece of my heart with you.
At the age of 40, I stood on the path of a new beginning. I found love and married for the first time, embracing the chaos and joy of becoming a wife and a mother a 8 months later to a precious baby boy! His laughter echoed through our home, his passion for Barney, the purple dinosaur was obnoxious but sweet with a constant background melody with all the singing. My husband was the love of my life and—whose ability to test my patience was matched only by his capacity to make me smile—I felt like life was finally unfolding in the way I'd always hoped.
But beneath the surface of this happiness, a silent storm was brewing.
The Unseen Battle
Chronic illness is a thief that steals in the night, taking pieces of you without ever being seen. It's not an illness in the traditional sense—there's no cure, no timeline for recovery. It's a condition, a new reality that settles into your bones and refuses to let go.
For me, it was fibromyalgia and persistent neck and back issues. The pain was constant, an unwelcome companion that shadowed my every move. On the outside, I looked fine—no casts, no visible wounds. But inside, it felt like my body was waging a war against itself.
People would say, "You don't look sick," or "Maybe you're just stressed." Their words, though well-intentioned, cut deep. How do you explain that every step feels like walking through quicksand? That fatigue isn't just being tired—it's a physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion that sleep can't fix.
The Weight of Loss
I had always been a caregiver at heart. As a Certified Nursing Assistant, I found purpose in helping others heal. The connections I made with my patients filled my days with meaning. But as my own health declined, I had to step back from the job I loved. It wasn't just a career I was losing—it was a part of my identity.
The losses compounded. I lost my father and husband to cancer, grief layering over pain like a heavy blanket. The distance from my family grew, both physically and emotionally. I felt isolated, trapped in a body that wouldn't cooperate, living a life that no longer felt like my own.
Friends drifted away when I canceled plans one too many times. Invitations stopped coming. It's hard for others to understand a pain they can't see, a battle that's fought entirely within. I felt like a burden, and the weight of that guilt was almost as heavy as the illness itself.
The Emotional Turmoil
Chronic illness doesn't just affect the body—it consumes the mind and spirit. I grappled with feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. Was I doing enough? Was I enough?
There were days when getting out of bed was my greatest accomplishment, yet it felt insignificant. I mourned the loss of the woman I used to be—the one who could work a 12-hour shift, come home, cook dinner, and still have energy to spare. Now, even simple tasks required careful planning and often, painful sacrifice.
The world didn't slow down because I was hurting. Bills still needed to be paid, my son still needed his mother, and life continued to move forward, relentless and unyielding.
What We Really Want
More than anything, we want to be seen—not just looked at, but truly seen. We want acknowledgment that our pain is real, that our struggles are valid. We don't need pity or unsolicited advice; we need empathy and understanding.
We crave connection—to feel like we're not alone in this journey. To find others who nod in silent agreement when we share our stories, who offer a hand to hold when the days are too dark to navigate alone.
We desire purpose beyond the pain. To contribute, to love, to laugh without the shadow of illness dimming our joy. We want to reclaim the parts of ourselves that feel lost and to discover new strengths we never knew we had.
Finding Purpose Amidst the Pain
In the depths of my struggle, I realized that while I couldn't control the cards I'd been dealt, I could choose how to play them. I began to focus on what I could do rather than what I couldn't. I channeled my passion for helping others into a new venture—supporting women who, like me, were navigating the treacherous waters of chronic illness and loss.
I started my own business, sharing products and resources that had made a difference in my life. I found solace in connecting with others, our shared experiences weaving a tapestry of resilience and hope.
Reconnecting with my adult daughter became a beacon of light. Together, we began to heal old wounds and forge a new relationship built on understanding and unconditional love. My son, with his boundless energy and infectious laughter, reminded me daily of the beauty that still existed in the world.

A Final Thought
Chronic illness may be a part of our lives, but it doesn't have to define us. We are more than our pain, more than our struggles. We are strong, resilient, and capable of incredible things—even if some days, incredible simply means getting through the day.
Remember, you are not alone. Your story matters, your pain is valid, and there is hope beyond the horizon.
Together, we can lift the veil of invisibility and step into a future filled with purpose, connection, and understanding.
With love and solidarity,
Tammy
